BOP insurance for contractors

BOP insurance packages general liability with commercial property and business interruption. For many small contractors, a business owners policy costs less than buying the pieces apart.

Who needs it: Trades with a shop, office, inventory, or gear worth protecting.

What BOP insurance covers

  • General liability for injuries and damage to others
  • Your shop, office, and business property
  • Business interruption income if a covered loss shuts you down
  • Tools and equipment, when added as an endorsement

What BOP insurance does not cover

  • Employee injuries (workers comp)
  • Work vehicles (commercial auto)
  • Professional mistakes (errors and omissions)
  • Floods and earthquakes, in most policies

How much does BOP insurance cost?

$125a month, about $1,503 a year

Who qualifies

BOPs are built for small, lower-risk businesses. Many handyman, painting, cleaning, and flooring businesses qualify. Higher-risk work such as roofing or large GC operations may need separate policies instead.

BOP or general liability alone

If you work out of your truck with a modest kit, general liability plus tools cover may be all you need. Once you rent a shop, hold inventory, or rely on expensive equipment, a BOP usually wins on price.

Only if you add tools and equipment (inland marine) cover. Base property cover usually applies at your listed location.
Is a BOP cheaper than separate policies?
Usually, for businesses that qualify. Compare the bundle against general liability plus the specific add-ons you need.
