Figures are typical amounts other businesses in your trade paid, from published customer data. They are not quotes. Workers comp is priced on your payroll, so a larger crew pays more than shown. Tools and equipment uses Insureon's figure for all construction businesses.

How the calculator works

Pick your trade and the calculator pulls the typical monthly cost other businesses in that trade paid for each coverage. Choose a business owners policy and it swaps in the BOP figure, since a BOP already includes general liability. Add a crew and it adds typical workers comp. Add vehicles and it adds commercial auto per vehicle.

The figures come from Insureon customer cost data for each trade, and from The Hartford for fencing. Insureon describes its numbers as the median cost of policies its customers bought, most of them small businesses with fewer than five employees.

What changes your real price

  • Your trade and the work you do. Roof work, gas lines, or framing raise prices within a trade.
  • Revenue and payroll. General liability often follows revenue, and workers comp follows payroll.
  • Claims history. A clean record is one of the biggest discounts available.
  • Your state. Rules, wages, and lawsuit climate all move the number.
  • Limits and deductibles. Higher limits cost more; higher deductibles on property and auto cost less.

Contractor insurance cost calculator FAQs

How accurate is this contractor insurance calculator?
It shows what businesses in your trade typically paid, based on published customer data from Insureon and The Hartford. Your real price depends on your revenue, payroll, claims history, state, and limits, so treat the result as a starting point and compare real quotes.
Why do some coverages say ask for a quote?
Bonds are priced on the bond amount and your credit, so there is no typical monthly figure. Where no figure is published for your trade, the calculator leaves the line out of the total instead of guessing. Tools and equipment uses the $42 a month Insureon reports across construction businesses.
Why is workers comp shown as a single figure?
Workers comp is priced on payroll times a rate for your trade's class code. The figure shown is typical for small crews. A larger payroll pays more.
How much does contractor insurance cost per year?
For most small trades, general liability alone runs roughly $700 to $2,000 a year depending on the trade. Adding workers comp, vehicles, and property can take the total into several thousand dollars a year.
